The Danish military said a Russian warship fired two illumination flares toward a helicopter carrying out a mission over the Baltic Sea off the coast of Gedser, in southern Denmark.

In a statement cited by Reuters, the Danish military said: “One of our EH101 Merlin helicopters was targeted with two illumination flares during a routine imaging operation near a Russian frigate anchored in international waters off Gedser.”
The statement said the frigate fired two flares toward the helicopter, one of which passed very close to the aircraft.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said Tuesday that the incident was completely unacceptable, adding that the Russian ambassador had been summoned to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also condemned what she described as “Russian recklessness” after the Russian frigate fired two illumination flares toward the helicopter.
In a statement, Frederiksen said Russia had acted recklessly toward the Danish military during a routine flight the previous day. She said such Russian actions were intended to intimidate and sow division, but would not succeed, adding: “We will not back down.”
