Nizhny Novgorod Governor Gleb Nikitin said in a statement posted on Telegram that the region came under a heavy drone attack overnight and Sunday morning, adding that more than 100 drones had been destroyed.
According to Russia’s TASS news agency, Nikitin said preliminary information indicated that there were no casualties. However, an industrial facility in the Kstovo area sustained significant damage. Emergency teams were working at the affected sites while authorities assessed damage to civilian infrastructure and property.
He warned that electricity could be temporarily disrupted and that hot water and heating supplies could decline in some residential areas during repair operations. He also said assistance would be provided to those affected by the attack.
Ukrainian media, meanwhile, reported that the attack targeted the Lukoil Nizhny Novgorod refinery in Kstovo and published footage it said showed a fire breaking out at the facility. The nature and extent of the damage to the refinery have not been independently confirmed.
Kstovo is located in Nizhny Novgorod Region, about 450 kilometers east of Moscow. It is home to one of Russia’s largest oil refineries, with a designed annual capacity of around 17 million tonnes, according to Ukrainian media reports.
Ukraine has intensified drone attacks on Russian oil facilities in recent months as part of efforts to target Russia’s energy sector. Moscow says it is intercepting the attacks and working to repair the resulting damage.
