Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei said Saturday that there has been no official government decision to change the country’s nuclear doctrine, but discussions are underway regarding Tehran’s approach to the issue.

Speaking to Iranian state television in remarks carried by Reuters, Rezaei said Iran’s nuclear program could only be discussed after the United States meets Tehran’s demands.

He explained that calls to change Iran’s nuclear doctrine reflect an ongoing debate over the country’s nuclear policy, but have not yet resulted in an official decision at the state-institution level.

Rezaei added that Iran is discussing whether to maintain its longstanding ban on nuclear weapons if hostilities resume.

He also stressed the need to “respect Iran’s nuclear rights under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if nuclear negotiations take place at a later stage.”

The Iranian official also said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed “until Iran’s conditions are met.”

Regarding a response to the U.S. message, Rezaei said he had reviewed a letter from U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance but had not responded to it yet.
