The House of Representatives formed a three-member committee of MPs to oversee the election of the Permanent Office and supervise the vote-counting process, in accordance with the provisions of the House’s internal regulations.
The House held its opening session under the chairmanship of MP Musa Wahsh after MP Majhem Sqour, the longest-serving member of parliament, declined to preside over the session due to his intention to run for the speakership.
Wahsh was assisted in chairing the session by MPs Rand Khazouz and Hamza Toubeisi, as the two youngest members present. Their duties will end immediately following the election of the House Speaker.
Article 3(b) of the House’s internal regulations stipulates that the MP presiding over the opening session is not eligible to run for Speaker during the same parliamentary session.
Under the internal regulations, a candidate wins the speakership by securing an absolute majority of votes cast if there are more than two candidates.
If no candidate obtains the required majority, a second round of voting is held between the two candidates who received the highest number of votes, with the candidate securing a relative majority declared the winner.
Following the election of the Speaker, the House will proceed to elect the First and Second Deputy Speakers and the Speaker’s assistants, completing the formation of the Permanent Office for the third ordinary session.
