In a statement on Tuesday, Russian security explained that the special operation to prevent the attack was launched after receiving intelligence regarding a weapons shipment sent from Slovakia through Poland and Belarus to the Moscow region. The shipment was organized by the Security Service of Ukraine with the help of European intelligence services.
A shipment of Spanish ceramic tiles was intercepted, inside of which 35 FPV drones were hidden. The drones were equipped with Canadian-made control systems resistant to electronic warfare, and their warheads contained foreign-made explosives. Before being shipped to Russia, these drones were pre-configured and assembled in Kyiv.
According to the statement, the shipment was stored in a pre-rented warehouse located near the target site. A Russian citizen, recruited by the adversary for a financial reward, rented the warehouse and received the shipment.
To prepare the site for launching the drones, the Ukrainians recruited two Moldovan citizens who carried out their assigned task and then left Russian territory.
To execute the plot, the Ukrainian side, through contacts in a terrorist organization banned in Russia, recruited a Russian citizen who was a former member of an ethnic organized crime group and had previously served a long prison sentence for serious crimes.
Following instructions from his handlers, the man assembled and launched the drones, then left the scene to wait at a designated location for an evacuation team that was supposed to transport him to Ukraine.
After the drones were launched, a special forces unit of the Russian FSB, which was tracking the operation, destroyed all of the attackers' drones.
The statement noted that the perpetrator of the attack was arrested and confessed to working for the Ukrainian side under the coordination of members of the aforementioned international terrorist organization. Meanwhile, his accomplice put up armed resistance during the arrest operation and was killed in an exchange of gunfire.
In recent days, Russian security has announced that it foiled several attempts by Ukrainian special services to carry out drone attacks against military infrastructure, military-industrial complex facilities, and personnel belonging to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
