China on Tuesday voiced its opposition to what it described as “illegal” US sanctions imposed on Iranian airlines, a day after the US Treasury secretary said the measures could soon force the airlines to cease operations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said during a press conference that China has consistently opposed “unilateral illegal sanctions” that do not comply with international law and have not been authorized by the UN Security Council, according to Agence France-Presse.
On Friday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said new US economic measures against Tehran amounted to what it described as “state terrorism,” calling them illegal and deplorable.
In a statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said the “US economic campaign is a harsh tool designed to inflict pain and suffering on Iranians,” adding that the sanctions pose serious risks to the health and livelihoods of millions of civilians.
The statement urged countries around the world to refrain from implementing the US sanctions.
Iran said all countries should avoid enforcing sanctions imposed on Tehran, adding that participation in them would amount to complicity in imposing what it described as one country’s illegal will on independent states.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also called on the international community to uphold the rule of law, saying Tehran would use all available means to defend itself against what it described as a joint military and economic attack by the United States and Israel.
