Iran’s Fars News Agency quoted the deputy governor for security affairs in Iran’s Khuzestan province as saying on Monday that the Karoun Petrochemical Plant, located near the city of Bandar Mahshahr in the country’s southwest, had come under attack.
The official said that parts of the facility were damaged after being struck by an Israeli projectile.
The incident came hours after the Israeli military announced that it had carried out airstrikes targeting military sites in western and central Iran. Iranian state television subsequently reported hearing explosions in Tehran, Tabriz, and Isfahan.
