Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for the Gaza Civil Defense, stated that 17 Palestinians, including four children, have died due to extreme cold and building collapses caused by the weather conditions.

In remarks shared via the Civil Defense’s official Telegram channel, Basal said that the weather depressions led to the complete collapse of more than 17 residential buildings, while over 90 other buildings sustained severe partial collapses, posing a direct threat to the lives of thousands of residents.

He added that nearly 90% of shelters across the Gaza Strip have been flooded by torrents and heavy rainfall, in addition to damage and flooding affecting all displacement tents in various areas.

As a result, thousands of families have lost their temporary shelters, with clothing, mattresses, and blankets destroyed, further exacerbating the humanitarian suffering of the population.

Basal noted that Civil Defense teams have received more than 5,000 distress calls from Palestinians since the beginning of the weather depressions.

He renewed his urgent appeal to the international community and humanitarian organizations to take immediate action to provide relief to residents and meet urgent needs.

Basal also stressed that “tents have proven to be a complete failure in the Gaza Strip,” calling for a complete halt to their entry. Instead, he urged the immediate launch of reconstruction efforts and the provision of safe housing that preserves human dignity and protects lives.

The war in the Gaza Strip erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation. Israel responded by declaring a state of war and initiating a large-scale military campaign that included intensive airstrikes followed by ground operations inside the territory.
