The move comes amid mounting legal and regulatory pressure on technology companies, alongside growing accusations that social media use has worsened anxiety, depression, and addictive behaviors among young people.

Public Scorecards for Platforms

The initiative is led by the Mental Health Coalition and operates through a public-facing scorecard system. Using a simplified color-coded rating model, it aims to inform users and parents about each platform’s level of commitment to protecting mental health, according to a report published by Android Headlines.

Why Now?

The platforms’ participation comes as lawsuits intensify and threats of regulatory restrictions—or even outright bans in some countries—continue to grow.

In this context, joining the initiative may be seen as a signal of openness and willingness to accept accountability.

Companies such as Meta and TikTok have stated that they have worked for years to improve safety tools. However, the presence of an independent standardized framework may offer the public clearer insight into the actual level of protection provided.

The ratings could also extend beyond public reputation. Advertising companies are closely monitoring these developments, as brands are increasingly concerned about appearing in digitally safe environments.

Any negative evaluation could therefore have a direct impact on advertising revenue.

A New Tool for Families

While rating systems have long existed for films and video games, the digital world has lacked a clear and accessible standard.

The S.O.S. initiative seeks to fill that gap by creating a shared language that enables families and teenagers to discuss online safety based on concrete data rather than vague warnings.

Some major companies have not yet joined the initiative, though Snap Inc. plans to begin the evaluation process in 2026.

The first batch of results is expected soon, potentially offering a clearer picture of which platforms prioritize the well-being of young users.

If successful, this initiative could mark the beginning of a new phase of structured public oversight over social media giants.
