After years of users relying on the web version to manage certain advanced tasks, Google has finally addressed one of the most noticeable gaps in the Gmail app on Android: the ability to create labels directly from a mobile device.

Although the app has long offered a strong experience for reading and replying to emails on the go, the absence of some organizational tools made it feel like a lighter version compared to the desktop interface.
Creating Labels from Your Phone
The new feature allows users to create a new label directly within the app, without needing to log in from a computer as was previously required.
The option can be accessed by opening the side menu, where a “Create label” button now appears alongside existing labels.
After tapping it, users can enter a name for the new label, and it becomes immediately available for use, according to a report published by PhoneArena.
Users can also now delete labels while on the go. This can be done by going to Settings, selecting the email account, then navigating to Manage labels to remove any label that is no longer needed.
To highlight the availability of the feature, the app displays a small circular badge on the menu button, along with a “New” tag next to the label creation option.
Why This Step Matters
While the update may seem minor, it represents an important step toward feature parity between the mobile and desktop versions.
As smartphones increasingly become primary work tools for many users, functional gaps have become more noticeable—and more frustrating.
This move is especially significant amid competition from other email apps such as Outlook and Spark, which already offer advanced organization tools on mobile devices.
With this update, Gmail appears to be positioning itself as a comprehensive email management hub—not just a quick-reading tool.
Gradual Rollout and Temporary Absence on iOS
The feature is being rolled out gradually to Android users, meaning it may appear on some accounts before others.
So far, there is no official information regarding when it will become available on iOS.
For many users who used to postpone organizing their inbox until returning to a computer, this seemingly small update could have a meaningful impact on daily productivity.
