Part of the Gemini 2.5 Flash series, Nano Banana was first announced in August and has since generated over 5 billion images within the Gemini app due to its ability to produce high-quality, creative visuals. Google highlighted that integrating Nano Banana into everyday services aims to make these advanced creative tools accessible for exploration, learning, and visual innovation.
Using Nano Banana in Google Search
Users can edit existing images or generate new ones using Google Lens:
Open the Google app on Android or iOS.
Access Google Lens.
Select the new Create Mode (yellow banana icon).
Choose or capture a photo.
Enter a descriptive text prompt for edits (e.g., "Make the image look like it was taken in a photo booth").
Use follow-up prompts for additional edits.
Share the final image directly with friends and family.
The feature also allows creating entirely new images from text descriptions via the Create Image tool in AI Mode, enabling unlimited creative possibilities. Currently, Google is rolling out this feature in the United States and India in English, with plans to expand to more countries and languages.
Advanced Features in NotebookLM
Within NotebookLM, Nano Banana enhances Video Overviews by adding six new artistic styles, including watercolor and anime, and generating illustrations that match the content’s context. A new Brief format allows concise, quick insights.
Creating a Video Overview in NotebookLM:
Select the source content within NotebookLM.
Click Video Overview.
Customize visuals or add editorial notes (e.g., focus on cost analysis sections or convert recipes into easy-to-follow videos).
Browse your notebook while the video is automatically generated.
Google plans to integrate Nano Banana into Google Photos in the coming weeks, giving users additional AI-powered tools to edit personal photos, aligning with the company’s mission to make generative AI capabilities accessible through familiar, user-friendly interfaces.
