Although black tea—the base for all tea varieties—contains a moderate amount of caffeine, coffee provides more than twice as much per cup:

Coffee: 80–100 mg of caffeine

Tea: 30–50 mg of caffeine

According to experts, this higher caffeine content gives coffee a stronger energy boost, helping increase alertness, improve physical performance, and enhance concentration.

Coffee is therefore a better option for those who tolerate caffeine well and seek a stronger mental and physical lift, especially in the morning or before workouts.

However, coffee can also cause anxiety, tension, and even sleep disturbances for many people. Since tea contains less caffeine and is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine, it provides a more sustained and calmer form of energy compared to coffee.

Tea Is Better for Digestion

Contrary to popular belief, experts say coffee can stimulate digestion due to its bitterness. Yet, some of its compounds may also trigger or worsen symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), leading to various digestive issues.

Tea, on the other hand, is gentler on the stomach thanks to its lower caffeine levels.

Which Should You Choose – Tea or Coffee?

If you tolerate caffeine well, you can enjoy your preferred morning drink for lasting energy throughout the day. Many people like to alternate between both beverages, depending on flavor and mood. However, if caffeine causes anxiety, tension, stomach discomfort, insomnia, or sleep disruption, experts recommend switching to tea or even decaffeinated coffee.

It’s also important to note that, according to general U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines, the recommended daily caffeine intake should not exceed 400 milligrams, roughly equivalent to four cups of coffee.
