A recent medical study revealed that regular use of fish oil is associated with a reduced risk of developing severe non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Researchers reached this conclusion after analyzing the medical data of approximately 489,000 individuals from the UK Biobank, tracking their health status over 12 months. During this period, 5,671 participants developed severe fatty liver disease. Data analysis showed that those who took fish oil supplements—the main source of omega-3 fatty acids—were about 7% less likely to develop severe liver damage compared to those who did not take the supplements.
Further analysis indicated that the protective effect of fish oil is partly due to reduced inflammation and improved metabolism. The supplement lowers C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation), raises levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL), and enhances kidney function, all of which contribute to better liver health.
Researchers emphasized that these findings support the use of omega-3 supplements as a potential preventive measure against severe fatty liver disease, especially given its increasing prevalence. Since the study was observational, scientists recommend considering fish oil as part of a healthy lifestyle rather than a comprehensive treatment. (Lenta.ru)
