In an unexpected move, Apple has breathed new life into a number of its older iPhones and iPads through a new update that ensures the continued operation of essential services such as iMessage and FaceTime, preventing these devices from becoming completely unusable in the coming years.

Alongside the release of the latest beta version of iOS 26.3, which introduces a new feature aimed at limiting the precision with which telecom companies can track users’ locations, Apple quietly rolled out iOS 12.5.8 and iPadOS 12.5.8 for a range of older devices.
Old Devices Still Supported
According to 9to5Mac, the update covers devices such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as the iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and the sixth-generation iPod touch.
The core purpose of this update is to extend the validity of a system certificate that was set to expire in January 2027.
Without this update, critical services like iMessage, FaceTime, and even device activation itself would have stopped working once the certificate expired.
Apple confirmed in the release notes that installing the update will ensure these services continue to function beyond 2027.
Rare Support in the Smartphone World
This update comes as a pleasant surprise for users who still rely on these devices as backup phones or for basic use.
At a time when most smartphone manufacturers end support for their devices after just three or four years, Apple is extending technical support to devices that are more than 12 years old.
Although there are no indications of further future updates for these models, extending the certificate gives them a renewed chance to continue performing essential tasks and delays their move to the graveyard of electronic devices.
A Smart Move for Users
For those still using any of these older devices for messaging, calls, or basic internet connectivity, Apple recommends installing the update immediately to ensure uninterrupted service in the years ahead.
