KYIV — A woman was killed and at least 12 people were injured in Russian strikes on Kyiv early Wednesday, Ukrainian authorities said, after the country’s air force warned of incoming ballistic missiles.
Ukraine has repeatedly urged its allies in recent months to supply additional U.S.-made Patriot air defense missiles to strengthen its ability to defend against Russian ballistic missile attacks.
Explosions were heard across the capital shortly after midnight on Tuesday night. Kyiv’s military administration said a barrage of missiles and drones damaged residential buildings and several warehouses.
Authorities confirmed that one woman was killed and at least 12 others were wounded in the attacks.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that at least three of the injured were hospitalized, with one reported to be in critical condition.
The latest attack follows Russian strikes on Kyiv and its surrounding region on Saturday that killed 10 people and injured more than 30, while Ukrainian drones reportedly sank a large Russian cargo vessel in the Black Sea.
Both sides have intensified long-range attacks in recent weeks, with Russia more than doubling its use of missiles during July.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the shortage of ballistic missile interceptors “only encourages Russia to carry out deadly attacks.”
