“Unfortunately, one person has been confirmed killed” in the attack, Kyiv’s military administration said on Telegram.

Earlier, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram: “The enemy is attacking the capital with ballistic weapons. The threat of further attacks remains. Stay in shelters!”

Klitschko also reported fires breaking out in several districts of the city.

An AFP journalist in the Ukrainian capital heard explosions after air raid sirens sounded, warning residents of incoming attacks.

The attack came after Zelenskyy warned on Wednesday evening that there was a “high probability” Russia would launch a major strike overnight.

“The Russians prepared for a large-scale attack several days ago, and there is a high probability that the strike will be carried out tonight,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.

He urged residents to seek shelter and renewed his call for the United States and Ukraine’s other allies to provide Kyiv with Patriot missiles, which are considered crucial for defending against Russian ballistic missiles.
