AMMAN — The head of the National Addiction Rehabilitation Center at Jordan’s Ministry of Health, Ahmad Al-Huneiti, said Tuesday that the center treated 549 cases of psychoactive substance addiction during 2025.
Speaking in televised remarks, Al-Huneiti said the center operates through two treatment pathways. The first consists of outpatient clinics, which recorded approximately 8,500 patient visits in 2025. The second is an inpatient unit with 40 beds, including four designated for women.
Al-Huneiti warned that crystal methamphetamine has severe effects on the human body, describing it as a highly addictive substance that intensely stimulates the central nervous system, often causing prolonged insomnia lasting several consecutive days.
He explained that crystal meth triggers excessive releases of dopamine and adrenaline, leading to severe physical exhaustion. The initial sense of euphoria gradually disappears, he said, leaving users dependent on the drug simply to carry out their daily activities.
According to Al-Huneiti, common signs of crystal meth use include prolonged wakefulness, mood swings, loss of appetite, and significant weight loss. He added that the drug also has serious consequences for social relationships as well as mental and physical health.
Former Director of the Anti-Narcotics Department Anwar Al-Tarawneh said crystal meth has been known since 1893 and was initially developed for medical purposes before its dangers and potential for abuse became clear.
Al-Tarawneh noted that crystal meth use causes hyperactivity and increased energy while impairing judgment and perception, making users a danger to themselves and others.
He urged parents to respond wisely if they discover that one of their children is addicted, stressing the importance of contacting the Anti-Narcotics Department to secure treatment. He also warned that crystal meth-induced psychosis can drive some users to commit criminal acts.
