Meta has rolled out a new feature in WhatsApp aimed at strengthening security for users at high risk of digital threats. The feature, called Strict Account Settings, targets journalists, public figures, and others who may face advanced cyberattacks, including spyware.

What Is WhatsApp’s Lockdown Mode?
The feature extends end-to-end encryption with additional layers of protection. It can only be activated on the user’s primary device via:
Settings > Privacy > Advanced Settings.
Key Security Enhancements
Once enabled, the feature automatically applies several protective measures:
Automatic two-step verification
Blocking media and attachments from unknown contacts
Muting calls from unrecognized numbers
Disabling link previews to reduce phishing risks
Hiding “Last Seen” and online status
Restricting visibility of profile photo, “About” info, and profile links
WhatsApp emphasized that this feature is intended for users who believe they may be targets of sophisticated cyberattacks and is not necessary for typical users.
Background of Security Concerns
The announcement follows documented cases of journalists, activists, and politicians being targeted by spyware attacks, including exploits attributed to groups like NSO. Some attacks employed zero-click exploits, allowing hackers to compromise iOS and Android devices without user interaction.
In August last year, WhatsApp patched a zero-day vulnerability on iOS and macOS linked to prior targeted attacks. Legal actions revealed that NSO continued using such exploits despite lawsuits filed by WhatsApp. In 2025, the company faced a $167 million fine over attacks affecting around 1,400 WhatsApp users in 2019.
Comparison with Apple’s Lockdown Mode
Apple first launched Lockdown Mode in July 2022 to protect high-risk users from spyware on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS by restricting certain functions to reduce the chance of exploitation.
By introducing Strict Account Settings, Meta reinforces its commitment to user privacy and highlights the growing importance of digital security amid increasing cyber threats.
