U.S. forces launched what the military described as “powerful” strikes against Iran on Tuesday in response to attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. military announced.
In a post on X, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes were carried out in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, warning that Iran would “pay a heavy price” for targeting and attacking commercial shipping.
CENTCOM added that “the aggression demonstrated by Iran was unjustified, dangerous, and constituted a clear violation of the ceasefire.”
Shortly before the strikes, the U.S. Treasury Department revoked a license that had temporarily suspended U.S. oil sanctions on Iran, describing Tehran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz as “completely unacceptable.”
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tehran would respond “decisively” to the U.S. strikes, accusing Washington of repeatedly violating the memorandum of understanding between the two countries.
The ceasefire between the United States and Iran came into effect on April 8, although sporadic violence has continued in the Gulf region.
Tuesday’s operation marked the first U.S. military strikes against Iran since the wave of air raids late last month, which Washington said were conducted in retaliation for Iranian attacks on commercial vessels.
