The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, reported that U.S. President Donald Trump discussed Iran with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine.
According to the newspaper, Trump was briefed on a range of options, including a return to full-scale military conflict with Iran. However, it noted that the U.S. president remains committed to pursuing negotiations with Tehran.
The officials added that Trump also told his aides he would not object to extending the August 18 deadline for reaching a nuclear agreement with Iran, allowing additional time for talks to continue.
At the same time, the U.S. president said he is currently limiting the response to targeted strikes against Iran when it violates the “memorandum of understanding.” Such violations led to an exchange of attacks over the weekend, undermining a fragile ceasefire reached two weeks earlier.
Officials said discussions focused on whether the United States should abandon negotiations and resume large-scale attacks on Iran—an option some participants described as “finishing the job.”
Although Trump has not made a final decision, officials said he told aides that a new round of comprehensive military strikes could disrupt diplomatic efforts and reduce Washington’s chances of ultimately dismantling Iran’s nuclear program through negotiations.
