Nearly two months after the disaster, relatives and rescue teams are still searching for missing people beneath the rubble.

The new toll, announced by National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez, represents an increase from the 6,301 deaths recorded last week.

The two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, caused at least 190 buildings to collapse when they struck the area near Venezuela’s coast on June 24.

Authorities said at least 60,000 homes were damaged to varying degrees, while 24,000 homes were deemed uninhabitable.

Thousands of Venezuelans are still living in temporary camps under difficult and unstable conditions.

In the capital, Caracas, heavy rains over the weekend destroyed some of the tents housing displaced residents.

So far, 335 homes have been provided out of the 4,000 the government has pledged to deliver to affected residents by the end of the year.
