A scheduling note stated that the United States requested the meeting.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he had been informed that “executions” in Iran had stopped, amid human rights reports of a violent crackdown by authorities against participants in anti-government protests.

In recent days, Trump has spoken about providing assistance to the Iranian people in the face of a crackdown launched by the authorities, which human rights groups say has resulted in the deaths of at least 3,428 people.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iran warned the United States that it is capable of responding to any attack, while sources reported that Washington had withdrawn personnel from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which was targeted by the Islamic Republic with missiles last year.

Tensions between the two adversaries, who have had no diplomatic relations since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, come after Trump warned Tehran of taking action against it over the suppression of protests.

Human rights organizations say that, amid days-long internet shutdowns, Iranian authorities are carrying out the harshest crackdown in years against protests that began over economic demands before escalating into political slogans. — (AFP)
