The Director General of the Jordan Electricity Company, Hassan Abdullah, said on Monday that exceeding benchmark levels of electricity losses results in fines imposed on electricity distribution companies, stressing that these fines are not borne by citizens.

Abdullah affirmed that the three electricity distribution companies exert significant efforts to curb cases of illegal electricity usage and impose penalties on those who tamper with or abuse the power grid.
He explained that electricity companies themselves bear the costs of electricity loss penalties, which amount to “millions of dinars” and are deducted from the companies’ profits. He emphasized that distributing electricity losses across citizens’ bills is “impossible and completely unacceptable.”
Abdullah noted that higher electricity bills during the summer and winter seasons are normal and not unique to Jordan’s electricity distribution companies, describing it as a global phenomenon resulting from increased demand for electricity for heating.
He added that the number of complaints received by the company regarding electricity bills remains within the normal range, attributing higher bills to increased consumption by citizens. He also referred to the “Waffer” (Save) campaign, which aims to provide guidance to citizens on ways to rationalize electricity consumption.
Abdullah pointed out that the company’s doors are open to any citizen wishing to object to their electricity bill, stressing that the company is ready to inspect household electrical wiring and examine the reasons behind increased consumption.
