Jordan’s Dams Ready for Upcoming Rainy Season
Jordan’s Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Al-Saud announced Thursday that the Kingdom’s dams are ready to receive water during the upcoming 2026/2027 rainy season.اضافة اعلان
Abu Al-Saud instructed all water-sector personnel to act responsibly and professionally in implementing all plans designed to address potential emergencies and rainwater floods across the Kingdom during the upcoming rainy season. He also called for the operations and control rooms at the ministry’s headquarters to be fully prepared and regularly updated.
The minister’s directives came after he received a report from the National Committee for Dam Safety following field visits by the committee and relevant experts to all dam sites across the Kingdom. The inspections assessed the dams’ readiness to receive water during the 2026/2027 rainy season and confirmed the safety of vital facilities to handle the expected inflows.
During a tour of several water facilities and hydropower generation stations, Abu Al-Saud, accompanied by Jordan Valley Authority Secretary-General Hisham Al-Haisa and a number of dam officials, reviewed efforts by authority personnel to complete the necessary maintenance, prepare the facilities, and ensure the safety of all infrastructure.
The work also includes clearing rainwater channels, valleys and water facilities to maximize the benefits of the rainy seasons across the Kingdom. The ministry said these vital facilities are particularly important amid national efforts to expand water harvesting, secure water supplies for various uses, support economic development and enhance food security, in line with the Economic Modernisation Vision and the National Water Strategy 2023–2040.
The National Committee for Dam Safety is a specialized national body comprising water experts experienced in field inspections, supported by specialized technicians and engineers. The committee conducts inspections and surveys of nearby valley channels to assess the dams’ performance and readiness during rainy seasons and floods.
It also monitors dam releases and follows readings from all water-discharge monitoring devices and measurements, analyzing and studying the data to ensure that information is continuously transmitted to the ministry’s main operations and control center, as well as to the relevant authorities in a timely manner so that necessary measures can be taken.
The committee also oversees mechanisms for releasing water from dams to meet various water needs when required and prepares regular water balances for all dams—daily, monthly and annually. These balances cover incoming water volumes, water released from dams, losses, stored quantities, and the amount of water released upon request.
