Jordan, EU discuss partnership, Mideast issues

AMMAN — ­Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh on Tuesday praised the EU's support for Jordan's development efforts in implementing national projects, saying the government's economic priorities for the next two years would deliver a “quantum leap” in development, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.  اضافة اعلان

At a meeting with European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, the Prime Minister spoke of Jordan’s efforts to reform the economic and political ecosystem to promote democratization and economic productivity.

For his part, Várhelyi commended Jordan's role in upholding regional stability and security as well as its support to Syrian refugees as it grapples to overcome economic challenges and spur economic growth. 


The meeting discussed regional developments, foremost of which the Palestinian cause and efforts to reach a political solution to the Syria crisis.

Earlier, deputy prime minister and minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, discussed with Várhelyi, means to cement the strategic partnership between Jordan and the EU.  The meeting tackled a multi-year EU support program mechanism under the Neighborhood, Development, and International Cooperation Instrument.

Safadi thanked the EU for its support to Jordan, noting the bloc's move to supply the Kingdom with COVID-19 vaccines and assist in cushioning the repercussions of the pandemic.

Safadi and Várhelyi discussed regional developments as well as the need for the international community to continue providing aid to Jordan to shoulder the burden of refugees.

Várhelyi commended Jordan's role, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, in establishing security and stability in the region, pointing out that the Kingdom is a key strategic partner of the EU.
