Jordan’s Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development clarified Tuesday that the statement that secondary education has become a three-year stage means that secondary school now comprises grades 10, 11 and 12, and does not mean that the General Examination will be spread over three years.

In a clarification of remarks by Minister of Education and Human Resources Development Azmi Mohafaza, the ministry said secondary education previously consisted of grades 11 and 12, while grade 10 was classified as part of basic education. Under the new system, grade 10 has been incorporated into the secondary education stage.
Mohafaza previously said in a televised statement that the former format of the Tawjihi examination had ended, and that the new General Examination would be used for admission to higher education institutions, while students would receive their secondary school certificate after successfully completing grade 12 at school.
Under the new system, students in grades 10 and 11 will study the same core subjects. After successfully completing grade 11, students may sit for the first part of the General Examination, covering Arabic, mathematics, Islamic education and Jordan’s history. These subjects account for 30% of the examination.
Students are not required to sit for these subjects immediately after grade 11 and may defer them until grade 12, Mohafaza explained.
In grade 12, students will select specialized subjects linked to their academic field and the university major they intend to pursue.
Mohafaza also explained that the Education and Human Resources Development Law defines the General Examination as the examination administered by the ministry based on secondary education curricula for the purpose of admission to higher education institutions.
He stressed that the secondary school certificate will now be awarded to students upon successfully completing grade 12 at school, while the General Examination will be dedicated to admission to higher education institutions.
