Jordan and Morocco on Friday signed an agreement on the extradition of individuals wanted in connection with criminal offenses or to serve custodial sentences, reflecting the depth of ties between the two countries and their commitment to strengthening legal and judicial cooperation and developing more effective mechanisms to combat crime.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Justice on Saturday, the signing ceremony was held in Morocco. Jordanian Minister of Justice Bassam Al-Talhouni signed the agreement on behalf of Jordan, while Moroccan Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi signed on behalf of Morocco.
The agreement comes as part of efforts by Jordan and Morocco to further develop their existing judicial and legal cooperation framework and strengthen mechanisms for combating crime. This includes extraditing individuals wanted by the authorities of either country for prosecution over an offense or to serve a custodial sentence imposed by the judicial authorities of the other party for committing a crime, in accordance with applicable national legislation and legal requirements in both countries.
Following the signing ceremony, Al-Talhouni said Jordanian-Moroccan relations are rooted in a long-standing history established by the late King Hussein bin Talal and the late King Hassan II.
"Today, and thanks to the royal directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II and his brother, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this step represents an important milestone in the path of cooperation," he said.
He added that the agreement marks an important step in strengthening legal and judicial cooperation between Jordan and Morocco and provides a more effective legal framework for regulating extradition procedures, contributing to the administration of justice, combating crime and preventing impunity.
Al-Talhouni said the signing reflects the distinguished relations between Jordan and Morocco and demonstrates both countries' commitment to expanding judicial cooperation and exchanging expertise and information.
He noted that strengthening international judicial cooperation has become essential in light of the rapid developments in criminal activity, stressing the importance of clear legal frameworks governing cooperation between countries and ensuring effective procedures while upholding the rule of law and established legal safeguards.
For his part, Moroccan Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi underscored the importance of the agreement in strengthening judicial cooperation between Morocco and Jordan, describing it as a significant addition to the bilateral agreements governing legal and judicial cooperation between the two countries.
He said the agreement reflects the shared commitment of both countries to enhance coordination in combating crime in all its forms, contributing to justice efforts and strengthening security and the rule of law.
Under the agreement, the two sides will cooperate in extraditing individuals wanted by the authorities, in accordance with the legal procedures and requirements applicable in both countries and while taking into account national legislation and relevant international obligations.
The agreement comes within the framework of the historic and fraternal ties between Jordan and Morocco and their shared commitment to further developing bilateral cooperation across various fields, including legal and judicial affairs, in a manner that serves the interests of both countries and their peoples.
