AMMAN — Hundreds attended the funeral of Jordanian
activist and opposition figure Laith Shubeilat who passed away on Sunday at the
age of 80.

Shubeilat was laid to rest in his family’s cemetery in Umm
Al-Hiran in East Amman.
Deputizing for His Majesty King Abdullah, Royal Hashemite
Court Chief Yousef Issawi attended in the funeral of the former lawmaker.
During the funeral, Issawi passed on His King’s condolences
to the Shubeilat clan and to the family and relatives of the deceased.
Shubeilat was born in Amman on October 28, 1942. He started
his primary studies at the National College in Beirut, where his father was
ambassador to Jordan. He continued his secondary studies at the Islamic College
in Amman for one year and later at Terra Sancta College until 1956. He then
returned to Beirut to study at the Public College before joining the American
University in Beirut.
Shubeilat was the first Islamist head of one of the largest
and most prominent professional unions, the Engineers Association, in 1982.
Shubeilat was a member of Parliament for Amman (third
district) during the 1984 and 1989 sessions.
He became one of the most vocal critics of governments.
