A blockbuster signing for Barcelona: After several days of negotiations with England's Manchester City, Barcelona officially announced on Tuesday the signing of Spanish national team captain Rodri to a four-year contract. Fresh off winning the World Cup this summer with "La Roja," his arrival embodies the renewed ambition of the Catalan club.

This stands as the premier transfer of the summer in Spain. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner—who had been linked in reports with a potential move to Real Madrid—chose Barcelona and its collective, attacking style over the spotlight of the Santiago Bernabéu.
The 30-year-old midfielder signed a contract on Tuesday running "until June 30, 2030" with the two-time defending Spanish champions. The deal is valued by Manchester City at €76.5 million (approximately $89 million) including add-ons, according to an official source at the English club speaking to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Since he lifted the World Cup trophy just under a month ago near New York, sports media in Madrid had insisted that Rodri was on the verge of joining Real Madrid. However, Barcelona remained his "first choice."
"I had other options, but Barcelona was my first choice," Rodri stated during his presentation to the media. "It is a massive club and a global benchmark due to its football philosophy, its way of understanding the game, and the values it represents."
The Spanish captain, who was named Player of the Tournament at the 2026 World Cup won by "La Roja," confirmed that a phone call with German manager Hansi Flick convinced him to make the move: "I spoke with him, of course, and I am very eager to train under his guidance. He has a very bold vision for football, which appeals to me greatly at this stage of my career and can add a lot to my game because I believe I still have room to develop. He can make me a more complete player."
The central midfielder had confirmed the previous day upon his arrival at the airport that joining Barcelona—a club whose collective style of play he had always admired despite growing up in Madrid—was a "dream come true."
This decision represents a symbolic victory for the Catalan club over its historic rival. Real Madrid strengthened its squad significantly this summer with six signings—including Ivorian winger Yan Diomande and World Cup winner Marc Cucurella—yet still lacks a midfielder of Rodri's caliber to succeed legendary figures Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić.
Rodri, whose full name is Rodrigo Hernández Cascante, previously played for Atlético Madrid and Villarreal. Over seven seasons, he served as the functional leader of Manchester City, establishing himself as one of the world's elite players under former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, culminating in his 2024 Ballon d'Or victory.
The English club expressed its gratitude to its former captain and pillar of its golden generation, "concluding a remarkable seven-year spell filled with achievements," most notably winning the UEFA Champions League in 2023 and securing four Premier League titles.
The 30-year-old Spaniard returned to peak form this summer during the North American World Cup after battling consecutive knee injuries. He also underwent a "minor back surgery" in late July, which raised initial questions regarding his physical readiness at the start of the season.
However, he confirmed on Tuesday that he is ready to resume training starting Wednesday, aiming to make himself available as quickly as possible for his manager, who is currently missing Frenkie de Jong due to injury.
The former maestro of Guardiola's setup will reunite with several Spanish teammates, reforming the core of the "La Roja" squad that secured a second World Cup title, alongside young talent Pau Cubarsí, Pedri, Dani Olmo, and phenom Lamine Yamal.
The explicitly stated objective is to win the UEFA Champions League for the sixth time in the Catalan club's history.
