Lionel Messi’s sorrow deepened after the Argentine star missed a penalty during Inter Miami’s 4-1 defeat to Nashville SC in his first Major League Soccer appearance for the club following the death of his father.

Nashville took the lead through Alex Muyl in the 17th minute before Inter Miami were awarded a chance to equalize. However, Messi missed the penalty in the 23rd minute, sending a weak effort toward goal.
It was Messi’s third consecutive missed penalty, after he failed to convert from the spot for Argentina against Austria and Egypt at the 2026 World Cup.
Before halftime, Messi set up Telasco Segovia, who dribbled past several defenders before firing a powerful shot to level the score for Inter Miami.
Nashville took control in the second half, with Hany Mukhtar scoring twice and Sam Surridge adding another goal to secure a 4-1 victory.
The result strengthened Nashville’s position at the top of the MLS standings with 43 points, five points clear of Inter Miami.
Messi’s father died last week at the age of 68 after a battle with illness.
The Argentine star traveled to his homeland to pay his final respects before returning to Miami.
