Causes of Laryngitis

Laryngitis can result from several factors:

Viruses: Such as cold viruses and influenza; the most common cause.

Bacteria: Less common, usually occurring after a viral infection.

Irritants: Tobacco smoke, dust, dry air, or chemical fumes.

Vocal strain: From speaking loudly, shouting, or singing.

Acid reflux: Stomach acid irritates the mucous membranes.

Weakened immunity.

Symptoms

Signs of laryngitis include:

Hoarseness or voice changes

Sore throat, especially when speaking

Dryness or sensation of a foreign body in the throat

Persistent cough, sometimes with mucus

Shortness of breath

Deep or muffled voice

In severe cases, complete loss of voice

Symptoms usually appear suddenly and improve within a few days with rest. If symptoms persist for more than 2–3 weeks, consult a doctor.

Treatment and Care

The main goal of treatment is to soothe the mucous membranes and protect the voice. Recommended measures include:

Voice rest: Speak as little as possible; even whispering can strain vocal cords.

Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids, preferably warm water or herbal teas like sage or chamomile.

Antibiotics: Only if a bacterial infection is confirmed, with a prescription.

Pain relief: Medications like ibuprofen or paracetamol can reduce discomfort.

Humidify the air: Use a damp cloth in heated rooms, ventilate the room, and avoid excessive heating.

Throat lozenges: Soothing lozenges help relieve irritation.

Quit smoking.

Neck wraps or heat therapy: Improve blood circulation and relaxation.

Steam inhalation: Chamomile or saline inhalation hydrates and calms the throat.

Honey: Soothes irritation and has antibacterial properties (not suitable for children under one year).

Following these steps helps relieve symptoms, protect the vocal cords, and accelerate recovery.
