AMMAN — Local revenues amounted to JD8,432
million in 2023, compared to JD8,121.9 million in 2022, reflecting a rise of
JD310.1 million.
This increase in local revenues resulted from
a surge in tax revenues of around JD136.4 million, and an uptick in non-tax
revenues of approximately JD173.7 million compared to 2022. The coverage of
local revenues for current expenditures reached 87.6 percent, illustrating the
government's strategy to bolster financial independence, Al-Mamlaka TV
reported.
The hike in tax revenues can be attributed to
the increase in general income and profit taxes by about JD215 million,
reaching JD1,763.2 million in 2023 compared to JD1,548.2 million in 2022. This
rise is attributed to improved taxpayer compliance in filing tax returns,
without resorting to tax rate hikes.
On another front, public expenditures surged
by JD537.2 million in 2023, totaling JD11,003.9 million, marking a 5.1 percent
increase compared to 2022. This increase is primarily due to the rise in
current expenditures by JD672 million, or 7.5 percent.
