According to a statement issued by GAM on Thursday, this milestone stems from the municipality's commitment to the international standard for sustainable cities and communities (ISO 37106). This standard supports the implementation of a citizen-centric approach to designing and executing smart cities. It defines a "smart" operating model for cities, outlining the best methods to activate visions, strategies, and policies at a faster pace, with greater agility, and with fewer risks.
GAM obtained this certification following an independent assessment conducted by BSI, a business improvement and standards company. This achievement reflects the maturity of the municipality's strategies and its excellence in the fields of sustainability and smart cities.
This milestone is of major significance given global urban challenges, as over half of the world's population currently resides in urban areas—a figure projected to rise to 68% by 2050, placing immense pressure on the transport, energy, and housing sectors. Smart cities serve as a vital tool to ensure efficient resource management and achieve sustainable development, possessing the capability to enhance efficiency and elevate the quality of life through technology integration and data-driven decision-making.
The Mayor of Amman and Chairman of GAM's Committee, Yousef Al-Shawarbeh, stated that this achievement reflects GAM's commitment to developing smart, sustainable services that place the citizen at the heart of its priorities and enhance the quality of life in the city. He emphasized the keenness to adopt innovative solutions based on technology and data, thereby supporting institutional performance efficiency and upgrading the level of services provided to citizens.
For his part, the Director of the Urban Observatory Department and Chairman of the Kitemark ISO 37106 Committee, Akram Khraisat, affirmed that GAM’s acquisition of the BSI Kitemark™ ISO 37106 for Smart Cities and Communities represents a significant step forward in developing the institutional framework. He noted that it confirms the municipality's commitment to implementing global standards in service management, solidifying Amman's position as a city that embraces smart transformation concepts and urban management innovation.
Samuel Thwaites, Commercial Director for Product Certification in Continental Europe, Middle East, and Africa at BSI, remarked that the Greater Amman Municipality is moving at a rapid pace toward transforming into a smart, sustainable city. This is being achieved by enhancing the execution of key city-wide processes and leveraging an open, service-oriented tech architecture on a city-wide scale.
He added that GAM has expanded its digital infrastructure to include solutions driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing across municipal services. This includes state-of-the-art data centers, command and control platforms, and an integrated system of interoperable applications, such as real-time traffic management systems and SCADA-backed environmental quality monitoring systems.
Thwaites explained that by deploying a scalable, service-oriented tech architecture, GAM allows data to flow seamlessly, enabling real-time decision-making and optimizing services provided to citizens. This positions Amman as an emerging regional leader in smart city innovation.
It is worth noting that BSI is a global business improvement and standards company that helps organizations address societal challenges, such as climate change and AI applications, with the aim of accelerating progress toward a fair society and a sustainable world.
