U.S. President Donald Trump warned Russia and China on Friday against selling weapons to Iran, saying he believes assurances from Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin that neither country has done so.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said, “The two major countries whose names are frequently mentioned in discussions about Iran, in my view, are not involved.”
He added, “If they were, it would be very bad for them and certainly not in their best interest.”
Trump’s remarks came amid reports that Washington is investigating whether Moscow and Beijing have been providing Iran with intelligence following a series of attacks on U.S. military bases.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday afternoon, Trump said, “President Xi told me he would not be involved, and President Putin said the same thing. I believe them. I don’t think they want to disappoint me.”
Trump also noted that Putin had made a similar commitment despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“He knows that I am not selling weapons to Ukraine; I am selling them to NATO countries. They are paying the full price. As for how those weapons are distributed afterward, I have no knowledge,” Trump said.
