On Wednesday, U.S. and Israeli officials said preparations were underway for an attack on Iran that could involve a week of intensive strikes, according to the U.S. news website Axios.

The U.S. Central Command also announced on Wednesday that transit routes through the Strait of Hormuz had been cleared of mines, rejecting Iranian reports claiming that commercial vessels had struck sea mines while passing through the strait.

On February 28, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities. Iran responded with missile and drone strikes against Israel and U.S. military bases and assets in the region, while tightening its control over the Strait of Hormuz.

On April 8, a ceasefire was reached between the warring parties. On June 18, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war across all fronts in the region.

Under the memorandum, the two countries were scheduled to hold negotiations over a 60-day period, ending on August 17, to reach a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions. However, the talks failed to make sufficient progress toward a final deal.
