US Vice President J.D. Vance has sent a message to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, in an effort to revive peace talks and avoid a new US attack on Iran, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.
The newspaper quoted a source as saying the message was sent at the direction of US President Donald Trump. The message, along with subsequent talks between US and Iranian officials, focused on establishing a potential framework for negotiations rather than discussing specific details of a peace proposal.
Meanwhile, a senior official familiar with the negotiations said Qatari mediators had presented Iran with a new draft agreement aimed at ending the war with the United States and Israel.
However, a senior Iranian official involved in the talks said Doha had presented only “unacceptable ideas,” rather than a formal proposal.
The non-Iranian official said the draft was presented on Sunday and that Iran is reviewing it and is expected to respond by the end of the week.
According to the official, the draft includes a seven-day timetable to address concerns raised by Tehran and Washington through daily confidence-building steps that each side would commit to implementing. The timetable would begin early next week, with several countries serving as guarantors of the agreement.
The Iranian official said Tehran’s policy of refusing to show any flexibility on the nuclear issue remains unchanged.
