AMMAN — The State of the Country Report for 2021 reflected the perspectives of employers, but failed to address the demands and challenges faced by employees, a union leader said, according to Jo24.اضافة اعلان

Khaled Abu Marjoub, the General Union of Workers in Public Services and Free Occupations, said the workers are key partners in economic development. The promotion of the tourism sector requires responding to the demands and needs of tens of thousands of workers, he insisted.

He said it is equally important is to deal with challenges that workers face in several touristic institutions, especially following COVID-19 and the eventual revival of the economic sector.

He explained that workers’ wages in the tourism sector have been worn out by the current economic conditions, as the “service allowance” remains low despite the return of business as usual. He urged the service allowance to be doubled to 10 percent.

“Hotel Owners are demanding to maintain a 5 percent service allowance, as opposed to a low sales tax of 8 percent instead of 16 percent, which damages workers’ wages after the completion of the Istidama program”, according to Abu Marjoub.

To upgrade the tourism sector, improve its services and strengthen its economic capacities, more attention is needed to the conditions of employees, improve their economic condition and “not to ignore their demands”, he said.
