Arab League Secretary-General Nabil El-Fahmy on Sunday reaffirmed the League’s support for the Sudanese people and their legitimate aspirations for security, peace and sustainable development.

El-Fahmy made the remarks during a meeting with UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan Pekka Haavisto. The two held an extensive round of talks on developments in Sudan and exchanged views on the outcome of a visit to Khartoum this week by the Quintet mechanism.
The mechanism includes the Arab League, African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), European Union and United Nations. The talks also addressed ways to support peace and stability in Sudan.
El-Fahmy stressed that the immediate priority remains ending hostilities, protecting civilians and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid in accordance with international law, alongside launching a Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned political process.
He also emphasized that addressing the Sudanese crisis requires simultaneous action on the political, humanitarian and military tracks.
El-Fahmy reiterated the principles underpinning the Arab League’s position on the crisis, foremost among them preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity; safeguarding the country’s national state institutions; rejecting any paths or arrangements that could entrench division or create parallel entities; preventing foreign interference in Sudanese affairs; and launching an inclusive political process led by Sudanese themselves and involving all segments of Sudanese society.
Haavisto, for his part, outlined UN efforts, in cooperation and coordination with the Arab League and the other members of the Quintet mechanism, to support efforts aimed at bringing the war to an end and resolving the conflict in Sudan.
The two sides also discussed various efforts to end the war by reaching a humanitarian truce that could pave the way for a permanent ceasefire while preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
