Libya said on Saturday that it does not allow any foreign parties to use the Misrata military base to launch attacks, denying a report by US network CNN that Ukrainian drones were being launched from the northwestern Libyan base to strike Russian tankers in the Mediterranean.

In a statement, Libya’s Defense Ministry said it had followed a media report alleging that the Misrata military base was being used as a launch point for military operations targeting foreign parties or interests, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
CNN had reported, citing a Ukrainian source, that Ukrainian drone operators had been deployed in northwestern Libya since late 2025.
The network also cited another source as saying that the Misrata military base was being used as a “launch point” for drones targeting tankers belonging to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet in the region, in exchange for providing training to Libyan forces.
Without naming CNN, Libya’s Defense Ministry categorically denied “the existence of any agreement, arrangement or coordination allowing the use of the Misrata military base, or any national military facility, as a platform to launch attacks or conduct military operations of any kind outside the framework of the Libyan state’s sovereign missions.”
In early March, Libya’s Ports and Maritime Transport Authority said the Russian tanker Arctic Metagaz, which was carrying liquefied natural gas, had been hit by explosions followed by a massive fire that resulted in the vessel sinking completely north of the port of Sirte.
Russia’s Transport Ministry, however, said the attack on the tanker was carried out from the Libyan coast using naval drones operated by the Ukrainian Navy.
