In a press statement on Wednesday, Al-Khatib said: “At the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, we place the protection of children and adolescents at the top of our priorities. We will work to provide all necessary regulatory and technical tools to ensure a safe and balanced digital environment, in cooperation with all partners from the public and private sectors. This committee represents a strategic step toward building an integrated national system that promotes the safe and responsible use of the Internet and confirms that Jordan is addressing digital challenges with seriousness and awareness.”

She added: “The formation of the national committee sends a clear message that the Kingdom is moving forward in strengthening digital space security and protecting its users. National efforts will continue to develop policies and programs that ensure the safe and responsible use of the Internet in line with global best practices, enhance Jordan’s standing in this vital field, and reflect the Kingdom’s commitment to providing a safe and balanced digital environment that enables children and adolescents to benefit from modern technology without being exposed to its risks.”

Minister of Government Communication and Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani had announced that the Cabinet approved the formation of a specialized national committee to protect children and adolescents from risks associated with social media platforms and the Internet. The decision was made during a Cabinet session held Tuesday in Karak Governorate. The committee will be chaired by the Chairperson of the TRC Board of Commissioners, while the TRC will serve as its secretariat.

The committee includes representatives from several ministries and national institutions, including the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, the National Council for Family Affairs, the National Cybersecurity Center, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Government Communication, the Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs and Holy Places, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Interior/Public Security Directorate – Family and Juvenile Protection Department, as well as the chief executives of the Kingdom’s main telecommunications companies (Zain, Orange, and Umniah).

The committee will study possible regulatory and technical options to regulate children’s access to social media platforms and assess the most suitable model for implementation in Jordan in terms of effectiveness, cost, and technical feasibility, in alignment with the national legal framework. It will also recommend necessary measures in coordination with relevant entities and develop practical implementation mechanisms to be carried out by concerned parties, including internet service providers and related platforms, within a specified timeframe.

The committee will place special emphasis on awareness and capacity-building by developing educational and awareness programs targeting children, adolescents, and parents to foster a culture of safe and responsible internet use. This includes proposing the systematic integration of digital safety and responsible usage concepts into the educational environment in coordination with the Ministry of Education, as well as designing and implementing phased and continuous national awareness campaigns in cooperation with the Ministry of Government Communication to raise public awareness of the risks associated with social media use and ways to prevent them, ensuring that awareness messages reach various segments of society in a professional and balanced manner.
