Speaking to Al-Mamlaka, Al-Hayari expected the imported olive oil to arrive within a few weeks (less than a month).

The current olive season is witnessing a noticeable decline due to water scarcity and drought conditions experienced across the Kingdom.

The Department of Statistics stated in a report that the overall seasonal performance of the olive oil yield is considered “weak” compared to previous seasons.

In earlier remarks to Al-Mamlaka, Minister of Agriculture Saeb Khriesat said the ministry resorted to allowing olive oil imports to address the shortage in production and to ease the financial burden on citizens.

The minister confirmed that prices will drop significantly as a result of the imports, making the product affordable for all.

In a previous statement, the ministry explained that the import process will be limited to countries that are members of the International Olive Council, in adherence to international standards and to ensure the quality of the imported product.

The ministry also published a set of guidelines related to olive oil imports, the most prominent of which is submitting a judicial commitment worth 25,000 Jordanian dinars, pledging not to sell the shipment outside the Jordanian market.

The guidelines additionally stipulate that the imported oil must not be blended, repackaged for local distribution, or re-exported.
