During Monday’s session—dedicated to discussing several government-submitted draft laws, most notably the amended National Service and Reserve Service Law—MPs stressed the importance of the bill in preparing youth and reinforcing national identity.
MP Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh affirmed that the Mithaq Party and its parliamentary bloc support every law that empowers youth, including the National Service Law, noting that “youth are partners in nation-building,” and stressing strong support for the law as it “contributes to protecting the homeland.”
MP Awni Al-Zu’bi said that “the presence of an enemy lying in wait for Jordan places us in exceptional circumstances, giving the law an urgent character,” while the Islamic Action Front bloc stated that it has a “respected position on the law” and strongly supports its passage.
MP Khamees Atiyeh said the law reinstates national values and the spirit of teamwork, praising the Crown Prince’s directives regarding national service.
MP Zuheir Al-Khushman noted that the law aims to “shape young people, not restrict them,” describing it as a “national training platform” that instills discipline and professional skills, rather than complicating young people’s lives.
MP Walid Al-Masri stated that the law reflects the Jordanian state’s vision of strengthening national identity, affirming the support of the Azm Party bloc and noting that “youth are the backbone of development.”
MP Mahmoud Al-Nuaimat also stressed the importance of training youth in the use of weapons, supporting the immediate discussion of the law without referring it to a parliamentary committee.
In August, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II announced that the National Service Program would soon be reactivated, during a meeting with young men and women from Irbid Governorate.
Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan confirmed that the draft National Service and Reserve Service Law would be among the government’s legislative priorities in the coming period, in preparation for launching the National Service Program announced by the Crown Prince at the beginning of next February.
The approval of the draft law comes as part of the legislative steps related to reactivating the National Service Program, set to begin implementation in early February next year, following the Crown Prince’s announcement of its return.
The draft law regulates provisions related to new legal requirements for activating and implementing the National Service Program, including acceptable deferment cases, and authorizes the Jordan Armed Forces – Arab Army to provide training programs in military centers and institutes for conscripts. Educational institutions may count this training toward university requirements in accordance with instructions issued by the Cabinet, and it may also count toward National Service obligations.
The draft law also cancels provisions granting those who complete National Service any priority in employment in ministries, government departments, public institutions, or private companies.
