Irbid Governor Radwan Al-Atoum stated that the building, which had been evacuated by the relevant authorities on Monday, collapsed early Tuesday morning.

The building, located near the “Darawsheh Intersection” in Irbid, had been deemed structurally unsafe by the National Building Council, which had recommended its demolition. Al-Atoum confirmed that the evacuation was a precautionary measure following the detection of severe cracks in the structure.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported due to the swift evacuation carried out by the Civil Defense Directorate and Irbid Police, who also evacuated a neighboring home to ensure the safety of nearby residents.

Al-Atoum explained that the decision to evacuate was based on alarming visual signs and documented photos showing visible cracks in the building. The Public Safety Committee acted on initial reports indicating an imminent risk of collapse.

The Minister of Public Works and Housing immediately instructed the National Building Council to inspect the site. A technical team was dispatched from Amman, including specialists and the head of the Irbid Engineers Association branch, Eng. Mahmoud Al-Rababaa, to assess the situation on-site.

Authorities barred anyone, including former residents, from approaching or re-entering the building to ensure public safety. The main street near Darawsheh Intersection, including roads leading north and east toward Al-Masa Roundabout, was closed as a precautionary measure by security agencies.

Residents expressed their gratitude for the rapid response and timely evacuation by the authorities, which ensured that no casualties occurred. They commended Irbid’s governor and the emergency teams for their swift and decisive action, emphasizing that the efficient response likely prevented a major disaster.

The incident, they added, reflects the competence and readiness of the relevant agencies in handling emergencies, and their prioritization of citizens' safety above all else.
