Italian Football Federation President Giovanni Malagò announced on Tuesday the appointment of Roberto Mancini as Italy’s new head coach, marking his second spell in charge of the national team.
Mancini has been tasked with reviving the four-time world champions after Italy missed the last three editions of the FIFA World Cup.
“I felt that the person who should become the national team coach (…) is Roberto Mancini,” Malagò said, adding that the new coach will be officially presented on Wednesday.
Mancini begins his second spell with the Azzurri after previously managing the national team for five years, during which he led Italy to the UEFA Euro 2020 title following a penalty shootout victory over England in the final.
The decision to reappoint Mancini came after the Italian Football Federation announced in April that it had terminated the contract of head coach Gennaro Gattuso following Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup finals.
Gattuso’s departure was followed by a series of administrative changes, with Italian Football Federation President Gabriele Gravina announcing his resignation and national team delegation chief Gianluigi Buffon also stepping down from his position.
