In a statement, the ministry said: “To avoid any harmful consequences, the drone was downed in a safe area away from populated regions.”

Ankara added that “an aerial contact was detected and tracked (...) as part of routine procedures” over the Black Sea, and “it was determined that the aerial object in question was an out-of-control drone.”

The statement further noted: “To ensure airspace security, our F-16 fighters were deployed under NATO and national command in an interception mission.”

The incident comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan warned on Saturday that the Black Sea could become a “confrontation zone” between Russia and Ukraine, following several recent strikes targeting ships.
