The FSB, the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, named the British diplomat, stating that he had been operating undercover on behalf of British intelligence.
The diplomat was given a two-week deadline to leave Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the British chargé d’affaires in Moscow to protest the situation.
The ministry stated, “It was reiterated that Moscow will not tolerate the activities of undeclared British intelligence officers in Russia.”
It added, “A warning was also issued that if London escalates the situation, the Russian side will respond decisively in kind.”
