Russia’s Ministry of Defense on Wednesday released a video showing a downed drone that Moscow says Ukraine used in an attack on the residence of President Vladimir Putin in northwestern Russia earlier this week—an allegation Kyiv has denied.

In a statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said the drone was carrying an explosive charge weighing about six kilograms and was detected and intercepted by air defense systems before reaching its target, according to Russia’s Sputnik news agency.
The footage published by the ministry shows the wreckage of the intercepted drone, which appeared black and relatively large, at the interception site.
The ministry stated that “during the period from December 28 to December 29, 2025, the Kyiv regime attempted to carry out a terrorist attack using a large number of long-range unmanned aerial vehicles against the residence of the President of the Russian Federation (Putin) in Novgorod,” noting that the drones were launched from the Sumy and Chernihiv regions.
It added that Kyiv attempted to carry out the strike simultaneously from multiple directions, with drones being shot down over the Bryansk, Smolensk, and Novgorod regions.
According to the statement, 49 unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted over the Bryansk region, one drone over the Smolensk region, and 41 over the Novgorod region. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that electronic warfare systems were used to repel what it described as a large-scale strike across the Bryansk, Smolensk, and Novgorod regions.
