Russian Response:
The Russian Foreign Ministry criticized the sanctions, describing them as likely to produce counterproductive results.
Spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Russia has developed a robust resilience against Western restrictions and will continue strengthening its economic capacity, including in the energy sector.
U.S. Context:
President Donald Trump announced the sanctions on Wednesday after plans for a new summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin collapsed, describing the talks as “fruitless.”
Chinese Response:
China also opposed the sanctions, calling them “unfounded under international law”.
Spokesperson Geng Shuang emphasized that China maintains a neutral stance on the Ukraine conflict and did not condemn Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
China criticized both the U.S. and EU sanctions affecting Russian companies and, by extension, Chinese firms, urging Brussels to stop portraying China as a problem and pledging to protect its legitimate rights and interests.
On suggestions that President Xi Jinping could influence Putin to end the war, Geng highlighted that dialogue and negotiation remain the only practical solutions to the Ukraine crisis.
