Britain’s newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham has approved the use of British military bases by the United States to carry out what the UK government described as “defensive strikes” against Iran, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing Bloomberg.
According to the report, the decision authorizes U.S. forces to use British military facilities as part of those operations.
Meanwhile, U.S. officials said President Donald Trump is expected to decide in the coming days whether to expand military operations against Iran and resume large-scale combat, according to Fox News. They stressed, however, that no final decision has yet been made.
The officials added that if Trump orders a return to full-scale military operations, the campaign would be more intensive and comprehensive than the U.S. airstrikes conducted over the past 10 consecutive nights, which began on July 7 and targeted Iranian military sites linked to operations around the Strait of Hormuz.
One official also said U.S. forces have largely avoided striking areas near Tehran or targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, adding that this could change if a decision is made to resume large-scale military operations.
