Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has called for an immediate halt to Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, emphasizing that the stability of Syria is a cornerstone for achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Albares reaffirmed Spain’s support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that repeated military actions by Israel only serve to destabilize the region and undermine efforts for a comprehensive and peaceful political transition in the country.
“We follow with deep concern the ongoing violence in Syria,” Albares said, urging Syrian authorities to ensure the protection of all religious and ethnic communities.
Growing International Condemnation
Albares' remarks come amid broad international condemnation of Israel’s recent airstrikes in Syria. Over the past two days, several Arab and Western nations have issued statements urging Israel to immediately cease its military operations inside Syrian borders.
EU spokesperson Anwar Al-Anouni also pressed Israel to respect Syria’s sovereignty and abide by the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
Recent Escalation
The latest statements follow a wave of violence in Syria, especially in Jaramana, Sahnaya, and Sweida. Clashes erupted last Tuesday in Jaramana after armed groups launched coordinated attacks, leading to at least 13 deaths, including two public security officers. The conflict later spread to Sahnaya and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya, resulting in the deaths of 16 more security personnel.
On Friday night, Israeli warplanes conducted a series of airstrikes on targets in Damascus countryside, Daraa, and Hama, marking one of the most intense aerial assaults in recent months. These followed a previous strike near the presidential palace in Damascus, which Israeli officials described as a message to the Syrian government—particularly over alleged threats to the Druze community, according to Israeli media narratives.
